Public Spaces
One of UCAN's objectives is to improve the condition of our neighborhood's shared spaces, which include Round Park, the Long Park redwood grove, Donald Lawton Park, the Hillcrest Hairpin and Oak Park (which is the only one of those that is actually an official city park), as well as the Uplands/Claremont gateway, the Domingo median and the many pathways that could serve as critical resources during emergencies and natural disasters. Before proposing any changes, UCAN's standing Public Spaces Committee will consult extensively with the neighborhood, including neighbors who are not members of UCAN, to achieve consensus. In September 2024, UCAN's provisional board submitted a letter to Berkeley City Councilmember Mark Humbert asking that the city designate Round Park an official park. In response, the City Council voted to study its potential to be a park and budgeted $150,000 for such a study and to gather neighborhood opinion on the issue. In early 2025, after some neighbors objected, and with the city facing a large budget deficit, that funding was rescinded and the process ended. There is no further action underway regarding Round Park.
