ABOUT UCAN
UCAN is a voluntary membership, dues-based, non-profit organization focused on the common interests of the 550 or so households within our area of the historic Claremont Tract. More than half the households are enrolled members, paying annual dues of $250.

We came together out of mutual desire for a greater sense of community and deeper neighborhood connection, and to preserve and enhance the safety and well-being of this wonderful slice of Berkeley and Oakland that we call home.
We have five standing committees, focused on neighborhood communications, community events, emergency preparedness, public safety and public spaces.

UCAN is governed by a seven-person board elected by its members. The initial organization was led by a 30-person Steering Committee, which chose a five-member Provisional Board to get the association up and running until the formal board was elected in February 2025. Board members will serve staggered two-year terms.

The members of the Steering Committee were Allan Abshez, Alan Levy, Rhonda Donato, Tushar Ranchod, Bill Falik, Carrie Avery, Larry Hobel, Emily Dybwad, Rick Catterton, Ken Dupee, Paul Churchill, Ellen Jacobs, Karin Joffe, Paul Valenstein, Sophie Yu Christopher, Jason Donchin, Joan Price, Millicent Johnson, John Faxio, Jeremy Rosenblatt, Jane Logan, Elena Eger, Gay Auerbach, Joe Wadcam, Doug Sovern, Richard Shapiro, Sophie McNeil, Rick Marcus, Linda Campbell, Tim Campbell, Holly Coates-Bash and Gordon Wozniak.
