Community Supplies

We're excited to announce the UCAN Community Supplies program! On our new site, you can list items for borrowing or find something you might need. Before heading to the store for a tall ladder, extra folding chairs, or specialized tools for a short-term project or event, check the site to see if a neighbor already has what you need. It’s an easy way to borrow items for quick tasks, or to list tools and supplies sitting in your garage that you’re willing to lend out or share.

• Save money and storage space: Borrow items you only need once in a while instead of buying new.

• Reduce waste: Help make our neighborhood more sustainable by reusing and sharing what we already own.

• Connect with neighbors: Strengthen our local community bonds through helpful neighbor-to-neighbor sharing.​

Who can join? This platform is free and open to all adult residents (18+) living within the UCAN neighborhood boundaries - you do not need to be a paying UCAN member to participate! Multiple adult members of the same household are welcome to create individual accounts.

How to get started:

1. Visit our UCAN page: Head to communitysupplies.org/c/uplands-claremont-area-neighbors

2. Register: Sign up using your name and email address on file with UCAN. (If an adult household member uses an email address we don't have on file, we'll reach out to the primary household contact to confirm neighborhood residence.)

3. Account Approval: Our UCAN Community Steward will review and approve your request to ensure you live in the neighborhood. Our current UCAN Community Steward is Ellen Jacobs. 

4. Browse & List: Once approved, jump in! Check out what’s available to borrow, or post items you’re willing to lend, give away, or sell.​

UCAN Sharing Site FAQs

What is the primary purpose of the UCAN Sharing Site?

The site is built to encourage resource-sharing, borrowing, and sustainability within our neighborhood. It’s a place to lend tools, event supplies, lawn equipment, and other household items to fellow UCAN neighbors.

Can items be listed for sale or rent, or is it strictly free sharing?

The site is primarily designed for free neighborly sharing, lending, and gifting. However, if you have an item you wish to sell or ask a small fee for, you are welcome to specify the price and details directly in the item’s description. Please note that any financial exchange or payment is strictly a direct private transaction between you and the buyer/borrower - UCAN does not manage or process payments.

Does it cost money to use the platform?

Use of the platform is free to users and UCAN.

Responsibility, Safety & Care

What is UCAN’s role and liability regarding shared items?

UCAN provides this web platform solely as a convenience tool to help neighbors connect. UCAN, its Board members, and organizers are not responsible or liable for any loss, damage, theft, personal injury, or disputes arising from the use or exchange of items listed on the site. All interactions, loans, and transactions are entirely peer-to-peer at your own risk and discretion.

What happens if an item I lend out gets damaged or lost?

We encourage open and friendly communication before handing over any item. Lenders and borrowers should agree beforehand on expectations for proper use, maintenance, and replacement or repair costs in the event of damage. UCAN does not inspect items, guarantee their condition, or mediate property disputes.

How do safety and community care work?

• Inspect before use: Borrowers should inspect tools and equipment before use to ensure they are safe and operational.

• Return promptly and clean: Always return borrowed items on time and in the condition (or better!) in which you received them.

• Communication: Use direct message or email to set clear pick-up/drop-off times and guidelines.
